This week, we celebrated UCF’s rise as Florida’s Next-Generation Preeminent University, qualifying for the state’s highest designation from the Florida Board of Governors. This recognition reflects our collective achievements in student success, research, and innovation — and it belongs to our students, faculty and staff whose talent and determination made it possible. Together, we’re boldly inventing the future.
Associate Professor Susanny Beltran and Professor Kim Gryglewicz received seed funding from the College of Health Professions and Sciences to study a cuddly robotic seal and its potential to ease loneliness and spark meaningful connections in older adults with dementia. While human-animal bonds are linked to healthy aging and better quality of life, robotic companions may offer a practical alternative to a live pet.
UCF Professor of Biology Barbara Sharanowski and computer science undergraduate students created The Crawling Dead, a desktop game that teaches players about the benefits of wasps in natural environments. Blending research with interactive learning, the game lets players take on the role of scientists tasked with protecting a national park by designing custom wasps to control invasive pests.
